Harlem, located in Upper Manhattan, New York City, is a neighborhood rich in history and cultural significance. Established in 1658 as Nieuw Haarlem by Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant, it was named after the Dutch city of Haarlem.

In the early 20th century, Harlem became a hub for African-American culture, giving rise to the Harlem Renaissance—a flourishing of art, music, and literature that had a profound impact on American culture. Today, Harlem is known for its historic brownstones, vibrant music scene, and landmarks such as the Apollo Theater, which has been a launching pad for numerous artists.

The neighborhood's rich cultural heritage continues to attract residents and visitors, contributing to its enduring legacy as a center of African-American life and culture in New York City.
